I don't know what to say about this book beyond saying it was AWESOME! (Yes, it deserves all caps.)R.L. Mathewson is an amazing writer. She knows how to suck me into a story and keep hold of me until the last page. And her books always stick with me long after I've finished them.
I'll admit that I was a little hesitant about this book when I first heard about it. I shouldn't have been since I've never read a bad book by Mathewson, but this was a new series; not one that has been out and had multiple books. I didn't know what to expect. I didn't know if it would disappoint me. But, that didn't stop me from snatching it up and devouring it at the first opportunity I had.
But once I started, I couldn't put it down. I loved Tristan. Yes, he was a jerk, but I still loved him. And I wanted him to get the girl he wanted. I really liked Marty. She was a strong woman but I kept yelling at her to give Tristan a chance. I wanted them together. And I love their families. They were just awesome and loving. R.L. Mathewson is great at writing fun, loving and real families.
I won't spoil the twist to the book, I'll just say that there is a twist...a couple of them really. The first one I loved. It was something different for the author. And while I was a little leery at first about the second twist, it grew on me. I can't wait to read more from this series.

Black Heart Cursed Hearts Book 1 edition by RL Mathewson Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews
There is only one person who Tristan wants and that is Marty. However despite his feelings he knows he needs to stay away. He has a reputation of being difficult and for some reason people think he has an anger management issue, no clue why that is. Tristan finds it hard to resist Marty though when they are paired together to work. Tristan decides to push her away but when he does will he be able to live with the consequences?
This has a ghostly aspect to the story but I loved it. Shayne is a hoot and how the rest of the story unfolds is mind blowing. Story had me laughing out loud repeatedly and I wanted more as it came to an end. Looking forward to next book.
First off, let me say that I know when picking up a book by R.L. Mathewson I am going to have a good laugh, have my heart strings tugged on and fall head over heels in love with the lead male because he is going to be hot, sarcastic and charming! Black Heart did not disappoint.
This paranormal romance was the just the right amount of para and romance. When we first meet Tristan it is as he is being abandoned by this mom and dad, who just don't know what to do with their little boy who is fighting a losing battle with the unknown. Tristan is taken in by the EMS worker who gets called to his house and is soon adopted by the family. Tristan knows that he is different, knows that he doesn't fit in, yet his family loves him and has always supported him, even though they have never figured out what was really wrong.
Tristan has always been drawn towards his neighbor, Marty, since they were little kids. There was always something there, but he was always afraid to get too close to her, because he didn't want his secret to scare her away.
This book has some big time twists and turns in it, that make you do a double take and go what the hell is going on! But I LOVED it. I could not put this book down. I was drawn in from the beginning to the end. Marty and Tristan's chemistry is magnetic and magical and pure and all the things you love about love stories. Any R.L. Mathewson fan is not going to be let down by this story. I can't wait to read more from this continuing series from R.L.
I was looking forward to this book the minute RL announced she would have a new offering for her readers early this year. I waited or should I say WE waited for her return after announcing a sabbatical to get her health issues in order. So it was a surprise to say the least when she made the announcement that she would have a book out this summer.
If you decide to read this book please read her introduction since it really is part of the story of how and why she began to write in the first place and be aware that this is a paranormal book and not one of her NFH books. It is meant to be different....to stretch the "writing chops" of the author. Sometimes when you start to read one particular author the reader gets used to a certain style or a group of characters and of course because we love them we want more but for a writer I think they need to step back from those characters from time to time to try something else and test their craft. This walk down a different path is good for the reader. It makes us appreciate the characters from the other series that we know and love and look forward to the continuation their stories more when they are published.
Now for the book- I enjoyed it very much. It had characters that I liked not just tolerated. Humor galore between the main characters and the ancillary characters that will take front row in later books. It had a family theme through the whole 400 pages. Yes, it was the first of the series so the fleshing out of the characters are necessary and understandable. This was not a 200 page book where everything is either tied together with a nice bow by page 199 nor was it a cliffhanger as some authors are currently doing but it is well thought out and takes its time with the story. As for all of RL works this one is a re-read. There is always so much more going on in the first read that sometimes you have to go back and read it again after a few days of what I like to call "book digestion." In the second read there is always something that was missed that makes the story even more thoughtful that was passed over the first time. I do not normally like reading paranormal but I would have to say that the first paranormal I ever read was RL's Pyte/Sentinel series and I loved it. Now I am a little more open to reading books from the paranormal genre.
I found Ms. Mathewson by accident about two years ago while fiddling in eBooks after receiving my for Christmas. I took a chance on one of her first NFH book and LOVED it. I quickly gobbled up all her other works in the months that followed. I find her voice refreshing and new in a stagnant book world.
