One September afternoon, not many years ago, three men sat on the banks of Cayuga Lake cleaning the fish they had caught in their nets the previous night. When they glanced up from their work, and looked beyond the southern borders of the lake, they could see, rising from the mantle of forestry, the towers and spires of Cornell University in Ithaca City. A little hard getting into, but really enjoyed it. Especially when your familiar with the area.
read the book as a teenager and enjoyed it as much the second time. I would also recommend the sequel "Secret of the Storm Country" also available on .
I first found this book in a basement sale buying it for it's old worn cover reading it for the first time when I was 15 the first copy I had was lost in a fire. I have just now read it for the second time 15 years later and it moves me the same. I believe this book is a great example of American literature and every young woman should read it. I want to thank who ever it was that took the time to make this poor forgotten book an ebook. M a y the student's god bless you.
I know it was written in the "accent" of the time and area, but it made it too hard to follow.
This book is set in and around Ithaca NY about 110 years ago. I would not have read it otherwise as I have lived in Ithaca for many years and was curious as to whether I might recognize the setting and maybe some of the activities depicted in the book. The answer was yes, which made it made it worth reading for me. It is unlikely that I would have finished it had I no connection to Ithaca, although I did find the ending worth the effort of getting there.
In good shape for the age.
This is a very old story of life of poverty in early 1900. It takes place in America, but you can hear the effect of the Irish in the accent of the characters.
Good read.
