My grandmother had the entire set of these books from the 1950s that my uncle had enjoyed many times. She gave me the first one to read when I was at her house on a school day when I was quite sick and needed to not be home alone. I flat out loved this book at that age and in those days. I was nine and it was 1974. She ended up giving me the entire set and I read them on many a rainy day until I was in high school.I am 50 years old now and the world of children is much more graphic, violent, sexualized and jaded. I have no kids of my own, but teach hundreds a week as a part of my music program that I carry to several schools every week. I know kids of elementary school age very well and know that, unfortunately, the age of child that would enjoy these mysteries is younger than in my day, but these are too difficult to read for most of them in the communities where I teach.
However, if you homeschool these are PERFECT if your kid is inquisitive and likes solving problems. Each book is a mystery that is solved by a 1950s white-bread nuclear family with parents who are shockingly permissive and gender roles that are right out of Happy Days or Laverne & Shirley. That being said, the stories are very interesting and fun to read. They challenge kids and make them think. And no one wears bike helmets, they get hurt and get over it, and they actually show smarts and initiative. They build stuff and learn sign language to include a deaf child in their club. The are *nice kids* from a past world.
This past world was real, but may be over the top for many parents or kids today. I read these as a child and was transported to a world where Leave it to Beaver was filled with accepted norms that would not fly today, but people were also nicer back then in many ways, and the world was much more innocent and safe.
If you think your kid might like these, buy this Kindle file first and read it yourself to see if you approve. If you do, there is ample material and vocabulary to challenge your kid and keep them happy. Girls play a big part in these books but are definitely less equal than boys as things were back then, but in a very innocent way and not really insulting at all, or could be with a very quick explanation to your children, so while seemingly a boy-driven series, it is not, really, so your kids, male or female, will like these equally, I think.
Keep in mind that many of the oddities will not be covered in the Kindle dictionary, so you may have to actually look up some stuff in a real one. Spelling is representative of the 1950s, with things like "goodbye" being spelled "good-by" and the kids saying, "By!" to one another, which really looks weird today. And there are simply items that many younger parents will not be familiar with, requiring the dictionary. I found that most of these *were* in the Kindle dictionary, though, so only a few things are not, and then there are those odd spellings...
Seriously, you could really hook your kid on reading with these. The full series is like 33 books, but only a handful have been turned into Kindle files, unfortunately. You can find the actual books for sale as complete sets online, but they are spendy due to the age and popularity. You can now purchase them from the website of the family of the author in paperback form, or you can get them here on Amazon. I like the Kindle version because of the built-in dictionary, but would still prefer to own the set in the new paperback versions.
The family's website is the happy hollisters dot com (you know how to fix that, I bet) so that you can read up on this series, then you can come back here to buy them.
If you purchase any of these books and read them yourself, please comment below to tell me what you think of its appropriateness for kids today. I am genuinely curious about that. Thanks!

The Happy Hollisters Jerry West Helen S Hamilton 9780448168708 Books Reviews
The Happy Hollister series of books were my favorites growing up in the early sixties. The stories are timeless and interesting. The children's ages of 12, 10, 7, 6, and 4 can relate on many levels. The siblings are loving and loyal to each other, and there is a bully who always loses. The parents are present and involved, and each mystery story is solved within each volume.
A wonderful book for children. After reading some of the trash published for chikdren to read, I am happy to see these excellent CLEAN books re-released. They prove that you can have a highly exciting and engaging story for chikdren to enjoy without making it inappropriate. If your child enjoys "The Boxcar Children" I am confident they will enjoy "The Happy Hollisters" both are great reads for children.
If you've read one tale about the Happy Hollisters, be assured that the same quality of writing does continue throughout the series. In this tale involving a trip to a small Indian (Native American) tribe, theft and robberies, buried treasures, there is also lots of friendship and fun for mid elementary age readers. Enjoyable, and recommended for those younger readers who don't need constant and bloody action, swearing, overly snarky or whiny leads, and no plot as displayed in much of today's literature.
I read this book when I was young, and was sorry to see that the series was not available for my children. I'm glad to see that it is now available as an ebook! I love the fact that the Happy Hollisters exhibit behavior that we all should emulate - kindness, generosity, hard work, and a strong moral code. They care for each other and work together as a family. I highly recommend this series!
I am 57 years old and I used to read these books as a child and absolutely loved them. I loved them so much that I decided to buy one for my granddaughter. I know that she will enjoy reading these books about the Holister children that are great at solving any kind of mysteries as much as I loved them as a child. I had to read it before I gave it to her and loved it. You will never be sorry if you purchase any these books about the Happy Holisters. Buy one or ten today. You will love them as much as your children do.
What is the grade level for this book? My response would be that it is for kids of all ages who want to take a breather from the stresses of life and spend a few moments with this perfect family. The Hollister kids make everything an adventure. Everything is “keen” and “swell” to them, but if a bully comes along they take it in stride and deal with it. A punch in the nose was occasionally in order. This book was a fond reminder of the first series of books I remember eagerly checking out from the library.
The happy Hollisters was a classic treat as a read aloud book. Some of the language is a little outdated which holds a certain amount of charm in itself.
We have already downloaded another book in the series, so we will be looking forward to reading that in the future.
It takes you back to the good all days of running with friends and getting into harmless adventures. I recommend giving it a try and reading it out loud to your young ones.
Happy Hollister truly was buried treasure in my list.
